Designing an Affordable Biofilm Bioreactor

Project by Lucas Bear, Lucas Buckwell, and Margaret Holyoke

Problem:

Bioreactors are powerful tools at the forefront of biomedical innovation. However, with a price tag anywhere between $20,000 and $200,000, they’re much too expensive for the average lab to purchase.

How Might We Create An Affordable Biofilm Bioreactor?

This project is in collaboration with the PhD students at the Shukla Lab for Designer Biomaterials, and we’ve been awarded the Brown School of Engineering’s Hazeltine Grant to fund our research.

Further specifying our model to align with the research areas of the Shukla Lab, how can we create a bioreactor that simulates biofilm growth in pipe flow?
